Alan Shearer commented on Victor Gjokores’ start in the Premier League.
The former Premier League striker believes that after a slow start, Victor Gjokores will score more goals for Arsenal.
The Gunners defeated Fulham 1-0 on Saturday, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to three points, three points ahead of second-placed Manchester City.
If Liverpool beats their rivals Manchester United on Sunday, the Reds will reduce the points gap to Arsenal to just one, and some people in the Mailbox are unsure whether the Gunners can maintain their current form.
So far this season, only 5 of Arsenal’s 15 goals have come from open play, with the remaining 10 from set pieces, which some critics believe is unsustainable.
Gjokores did not score against Fulham; the Swedish international has scored three goals in his first eight Premier League appearances for the Gunners.
On Saturday, Arsenal again defeated Fulham via a set piece, after which Shearer was asked to analyze Gjokores’ Premier League start. Gjokores scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for Rio Ave.
Shearer told BBC’s Match of the Day: “He is far off the level of the three we showed in the previous video (Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappé).
“But I think he brings a different kind of advantage. There’s no doubt he needs to improve his scoring, as you said, he’s only scored three goals.
“But one of his advantages, which Arsenal also excels at, is that he can drop back toward the opposition defense. When he does that, he creates space for other players to attack, because last season Havertz and Merino were closer in defense, making it easier for opponents to defend.”
“When you run into the opposition, they push deeper, opening attacking space for others. From that perspective, I think he has strengthened Arsenal.”
When asked if he expects Gjokores to score more goals for Arsenal, Shearer replied: “I think he will score some, but obviously not as many as last season.
“However, as Arsenal create more chances, he will score, and his goal tally should increase.”
