In the EuroBasket Round of 16, Italy suffered a 77-84 defeat to Slovenia and were eliminated.
After the game, Italian head coach Giancarlo Pozzecco announced his resignation. He stated:
"This was my last game with Italy. I truly love my players. I don’t care what others think of me as a coach, nor do I focus on my own career. My life and coaching career have always been devoted to them. Today I am sad, not because we lost the game, but because I saw them suffer. Even if I am the worst coach in the world, I don’t care, but no one will ever respect and love Italian players the way I do."
Meanwhile, veteran Italian player Danilo Gallinari also announced his retirement from the national team.
