Even though it’s still just the preseason, fans are already buzzing with excitement. After a long offseason, everyone is eager to see how their favorite teams will perform in the new season. However, there appears to be a significant disparity between the Eastern and Western Conferences. The East has often been jokingly referred to as a “soft conference,” as most teams can make the playoffs as long as they don’t intentionally tank. In contrast, the West is fiercely competitive, with no team to be underestimated.

According to BR’s predictions, the Lakers and Warriors are expected to tie, each finishing with a 47-35 record. The defending champions, the Thunder, are projected to lead the league with 62 wins. Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Nets are predicted to finish at the bottom, given their relatively weak roster and low pressure to achieve high results.

Both the Lakers and Warriors face their own challenges. In the West, a 47-win target may not even guarantee a playoff spot. The Lakers have obvious roster issues, which were highlighted after their preseason opener loss to the Suns. The Warriors, although having resolved Kuminga’s contract situation, are dealing with Jimmy Butler’s injury concerns. With core players like Curry, Butler, and Draymond Green approaching the later stages of their careers, any dip in form or injury could lead to a sharp decline in the Warriors’ strength.

The Thunder have been at the top of the league over the past two seasons and boast very stable performance. Management has given substantial contracts to multiple key players, ensuring that the team will remain championship contenders for at least the next five years. Meanwhile, some Eastern powerhouses have struggled with injuries or roster changes, indirectly increasing the Thunder’s chances of defending their title. In the East, the New York Knicks are highly regarded, projected to finish 53-29, making them the most competitive team in the conference.

The Brooklyn Nets are currently going through a tough period, with their primary scorer Cameron Thomas struggling for attention. The Western Suns face a similar predicament; after losing Durant and Beal, their outlook has dimmed. Although predicted to win only 26 games, this underestimation could serve as motivation for the team’s leader, Devin Booker, to ignite his competitive drive.
